A new kid is on the block. The ViPR (viper) has arrived. Looking like a very large sausage with handles built in it stands about one metre high and is made of rubber. The ViPR comes in a variety of weights ranging from 4 Kg all the way to 20 Kg.

You can lift it, push it, squash it and roll on it.It can be used whilst squatting, lunging and pressing. It is said to combine aerobic and strength training in the same workout making them more challenging and therefore more effective.

The ViPR is fairly new having made it’s debut late in 2008 but is already taking the fitness industry by storm and is being sold in large numbers into gyms in the UK. Virgin Active is the first gym chain to take it on and I’m sure many others will follow.

A lot of interest has also been shown by rugby and football clubs who see this as a great addition to help improve players fitness.

The ViPR has been developed by Michol Dalcourt who has trained many Olympic gold medal winners. Touted as being able to replace multiple pieces of gym equipment including dumb bells, stability balls, medicine balls and kettle bells.

Being a new piece of exercise equipment being sold at the moment into the UK people living elsewhere may have to wait awhile before it becomes availible in their country. It is also a tad expensive at the moment but no doubt once production has been scaled up the price should come down.

I have my eye on the ViPR and may well add it to the exercise equipment I already have (if I can persuade my husband that is!)

Other pieces of functional exercise equipment you may wish to take a look at include KettleWorx Fitness and The Firm Wave.
