Workouts like everything in life need to be balanced. The problem is when we exercise we tend to do more and more of the things that we like. Or to put it another way exercises we can do well.
For men that tends to be working out the upper part of her body to the exclusion of everything else. If you were to analyse a man’s work out you’d probably find 75% of all the time they spend in the gym is spent on the Peck deck, bench pressing and doing bicep curls.
Women on the other hand will tend to do only cardiovascular work on a treadmill, cross trainer or exercise bike. It’s rare to find a woman in the free weights section in a gym.
What we really want is a balanced workout which would include an element of strength training cardio vascular, stretching and relaxation. That way we keep our body balanced and pain-free.
In my experience an unbalanced body will over time particularly as we get older and get into our late 40s and early 50s will develop postural imbalances which will lead to pain.
So we need to get out of our comfort zones and do the things we really don’t like to do. I always do exercises I dislike it because I know if I dislike them they are probably the ones I need to do the most. Unfortunately this takes a very disciplined approach and one that most people aren’t prepared to implement.
I often feel like crying when seeing some of the poor technique and downright dangerous practices people working out in a gym exhibit. it’s all I can do to stop myself from jumping up and physically stopping them exercising.
So think about how your workouts might be unbalanced and make an effort to change them now before it’s to late.
