I’ve been seeing a lot of articles recently all saying the same thing how to get fit at 40, 50, 60 or 70 you get the idea. As if getting fit and staying fit has anything to do with how old you are. Yes as you get older you do need to take a little bit more care in the type and intensity of the exercise you do.
It’s also more important as you get older to ensure your health professional whether that’s a physician or personal trainer has looked at what you’re going to do and has given you the all clear to do it.
The elements that make up getting fit as always include strength training, cardiovascular work, stretching and eating a sensible and balanced diet. For most people anything in the extreme range is not only unnecessary but can be downright dangerous. It’s not necessary to be extreme if all we want to do is maintain a good level of fitness that will enable us to get the best out of our normal daily activities it really doesn’t have to be that hard.
If we want to be an elite athlete that’s a different matter but for the average person getting strong and flexible requires 20 to 30 minutes a day three times a week of exercise at a reasonable intensity and over a long time frame. In other words you should get slightly sweaty and out of breath. Not sweating like a pig and panting like an express train.
The trick is to take a longer view on getting into shape you are not going to lose 20 years of accumulated fat in a few weeks no matter what the advertisements might say. Not only are you not going to do it attempting to do it can be hazardous to your health.
Be sensible and take a balanced approach to fitness and healthy weight loss.
