It looks like the fast-food chains are in trouble once again and I have to say this time I think it is well justified. One particular fast-food chain and I’ll mention no names has developed a meal in which it touts as healthy because it has no bread bun. now you’d think without the bread maybe this meal would be healthier than some of the others wouldn’t you?
Unfortunately not. This particular meal without fries or drink tops out at mind bending 1200 calories. That’s not a spelling mistake it really is 1200 calories half of an average man is total calorie requirements for the day. Are these people insane? With the majority, I think the figure is around 80% of all Americans overweight or obese 1200 cal in one meal what’s that all about?
It’s challenging enough these days to find any sort of healthy food. I live in the United Kingdom and recently spent two weeks on holiday visiting the amusement parks in Florida. I discovered that food in the supermarkets was cheaper than it is over here.
That is unhealthy foods like crisps, pre-packaged foods, ready meals and other junk food was very cheap. But when I tried to find healthier foods yes they were available but were very expensive. Even more expensive than they are over here. When fast food is so cheap I saw cheeseburger and Fries offered for $.99. It would be impossible to buy the ingredients and produce any sort of a healthy meal for that much money.
With fast junk food (calorie dense foods) so cheaply available I can’t really blame family on a very tight budget buying this type of food on a fairly regular basis. Until healthy foods become not only more readily available but also a price the average family can afford I can only see the obesity problem in the United States getting a lot worse.
It makes me wonder whether the cost of obesity related diseases is more than it would cost to subsidise healthy foods. My guess is it would be much cheaper to subsidise the food than it costs the government in health care.
But then the fast-food industry would lose money and as we all know it’s money that makes the world go round not common sense.
